Oasis Magazine Issue 20 - Out Now in Stores

Summer marks the phase of happy pastel hued exploration but aside from traveling and bright summery colors – which we love- we dabble with the idea of exploration within the realm of the arts and culture scene. Frank Borman, Commander of Apollo 8 and retired NASA astronaut, noted, “ Exploration is the essence of the human spirit.”

Perhaps nothing rings more true than the journey a group of brave Saudi women went on to base camp Mount Everest to bring light and ignite the conversation around breast cancer and breast cancer awareness in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Other achievements rang across the region, Nuqat’s design conference this year marked it’s largest ever consortium and under the themed banner of  “ The Lost City of Arabesque”, designers and participants explored the relation and impact their work has in defining contemporary Arab identity.

Exploring different genres of music and mixing Arabic and Western influences resulted in the birth of musical sensation Mashrou’ Leila who have region under their spell with their unique soulful sound.

We sat down with award-winning photographer Pete Eckert who has proven that the loss of sight is not synonymous with the loss of creativity and vision; we had an enlightening conversation with French photographer JR who considers the streets his canvases and refuses to dictate to the passerbys what they should think about his work and allows them to lend more layers to the possible meanings behind his art; we discover the true depths of colors and layers with the Milan based art and Design studio Carnovsky; we discover and explore some of the latest talents emerging from the region; we delve into the obsession surrounding single Saudi women with artist Wasma Mansour and discover more about the Arab man with photographer Tamara Abdul Hadi; we finally hit the road and even underground with the team Crack the Surfance who have taken urban exploration to a whole new level; and finally go on a journey with the Redball which has thrown caution into the wind and traveled across the globe, adopting cities as its canvas and squeezing itself between buildings and underpasses.

With all this exploring, we thought you deserved some delicious treats, so sink your teeth into some deceptively delicious icy treats with artist Anna Barlow and chocolaty delights with artist Raphael Volkmer.

“ We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”  – T.S. Elliot
