Born in Dubai, Abdelmonem Bin Eisa Alserkal, developed a vision for Alserkal Avenue arts district which hosts contemporary art spaces in the region. UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai awarded Alserkal family with Patron of the Arts award by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in 2012 and 2013 for their contribution to the arts. In an interview with Oasis magazine, he said: “I believe there are almost 200 nationalities in Dubai today, the society is a multi-cultural audience. Art brings community together, and with each art space representing its own program and artist roster from the MENA region and beyond is what appeals to any cultural mind.” He described Alserkal Avenue as an organic development, an ongoing process that took time.

The entity is part of an evolution focused on contemporary art. Alserkal Avenue is a home to various creative spaces from the art galleries to alternative community, music, and photography spaces. “The art galleries situated within Alserkal Avenue are the leaders of the art industry.”

Abdelmonem believes artists have garnered international acclaim by representing an impressive artists roster program, while also paving the way for emerging artists into international spotlight.

“Back in 2007 when we built the warehouse spaces, we had a mix of businesses join Alserkal Avenue, from industrial to creative organizations, but the very first art gallery to pave the way for others was Ayyam Gallery that opened back in 2008. Then gradually the growth continued as more art galleries and creative spaces developed interest and joined Alserkal Avenue. It took us about five years to become the Arts District we are today. The integrity of the district, its synergy and location within the Industrial area in Dubai is what creates an integrity and dynamic like no other.”

Alserkal Avenue facilitates development of local artists and is a regular participant in high-profile festivals, artist exchanges and residencies.
